Budget 'will lead to more drinking at home' ? This Is Jersey

MIDDLE Jersey will be hardest hit by ?excessive? above-inflation rises in alcohol duty proposed in the 2013 Budget, according to the head of Jersey?s biggest pub group.

Liberation Group chief executive Mark Crowther said that the ten per cent duty rises on spirits and wine, eight per cent rise on strong beer and cider and five per cent rise on weaker beer and cider announced yesterday were ?disappointing? and should be rethought.

He also said that States? claims that higher duties would improve the health of Islanders by encouraging them to drink less were ?utter rubbish? and would only lead to more people drinking at home where it could not be controlled.

Commenting on the Budget proposals lodged with the States yesterday, which are due to be debated by the Assembly in December, he said: ?I think it is disappointing that middle Jersey is getting hit again with what I consider to be really excessive alcohol duty increases.?
