Meet the New NASA-Boeing X-48C

The flattened-out flier you see here is the X-48C Blended Wing Body, an x-plane in development by NASA and Boeing. NASA snapped this photo yesterday as the unmanned plane took off from Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., where it completed its first successful test flight.

"Blended Wing Body" refers to the X-48C's somewhat triangular shape. It's an old idea in aeronautics?building an aircraft that gets its lift from the fuselage rather than just the wings. The potential advantage of this design is less drag and therefore better fuel economy than the "tubular" airliner design we're all accustomed to. It'd be quieter, too. So NASA has been experimenting with designs for years to see whether this body style could go into future aircraft.

The previous such NASA-Boeing collaboration was the X-48B (seen below), which flew nearly 100 times between 2007 and 2010. X-48C has a 21-foot wingspan and weighs about 500 pounds, so it's close in specs to its predecessor. However, the C comes with two engines making 89 lbs. of thrust as opposed to the three engines each making 50 lbs. on X-48B.

The current aircraft is just a small-scale model of what Boeing envisions building someday. Aviation Week says the aerospace giant foresees building a military-grade version with a 240-foot wingspan, or more than 10 times as big as X-48C. (By comparison, the similarly-shaped B-2 measures only 172 feet.)

In the short term, NASA plans to conduct flight tests through the fall.

Gov. O'Malley Unveils Gambling Expansion Bill In Time For Special ...

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CBSDC) - Maryland Governor Martin O?Malley pushed out his proposed gambling bill Tuesday evening just days after announcing a second special session devoted to the issue.

The expanded gambling bill outlines the target for a new casino and which games will be inside of it, but it raises some interesting concerns likely to be debated in the special session set to begin Thursday.

In his gambling bill, Gov. O?Malley specified that there is potential for a new casino in Prince George?s County, table games would be allowed, and the casinos would earn a larger portion of the revenue generated by gambling.

The looming question remains, where in Prince George?s County will the new casino be designated to be built? Gov. O?Malley said Rosecroft Raceway is still in the running, but the National Harbor seems to be the popular vote for gambling fans, located just across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from Virginia, and easily accessible from the beltway.

The new bill proposed by Gov. O?Malley says that the location for the new casino will be decided later.

The gambling expansion bill will see great difficulty in getting passed, as it must go through three different levels of scrutiny before becoming a law. The three levels include the Maryland Senate, expected to pass the bill, the Maryland House of Delegates, which is predicted to be a difficult victory for the bill, and a majority approval from Prince George?s County residents themselves.

Oh, my stars and hexagons! DNA code shapes gold nanoparticles

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? DNA holds the genetic code for all sorts of biological molecules and traits. But University of Illinois researchers have found that DNA's code can similarly shape metallic structures.

The team found that DNA segments can direct the shape of gold nanoparticles -- tiny gold crystals that have many applications in medicine, electronics and catalysis. Led by Yi Lu, the Schenck Professor of Chemistry at the U. of I., the team published its surprising findings in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

"DNA-encoded nanoparticle synthesis can provide us a facile but novel way to produce nanoparticles with predictable shape and properties," Lu said. "Such a discovery has potential impacts in bio-nanotechnology and applications in our everyday lives such as catalysis, sensing, imaging and medicine."

Gold nanoparticles have wide applications in both biology and materials science thanks to their unique physicochemical properties. Properties of a gold nanoparticle are largely determined by its shape and size, so it is critical to be able to tailor the properties of a nanoparticle for a specific application.

"We wondered whether different combinations of DNA sequences could constitute 'genetic codes' to direct the nanomaterial synthesis in a way similar to their direction of protein synthesis," said Zidong Wang, a recent graduate of Lu's group and the first author of the paper.

Gold nanoparticles are made by sewing tiny gold seeds in a solution of gold salt. Particles grow as gold in the salt solution deposits onto the seeds. Lu's group incubated the gold seeds with short segments of DNA before adding the salt solution, causing the particles to grow into various shapes determined by the genetic code of the DNA.

The DNA alphabet comprises four letters: A, T, G and C. The term genetic code refers to the sequence of these letters, called bases. The four bases and their combinations can bind differently with facets of gold nanoseeds and direct the nanoseeds' growth pathways, resulting in different shapes.

In their experiments, the researchers found that strands of repeating A's produced rough, round gold particles; T's, stars; C's, round, flat discs; G's, hexagons. Then the group tested DNA strands that were a combination of two bases, for example, 10 T's and 20 A's. They found that many of the bases compete with each other resulting in intermediate shapes, although A dominates over T.

Next, the researchers plan to investigate exactly how DNA codes direct nanoparticle growth. They also plan to apply their method to synthesize other types of nanomaterials with novel applications.

The National Science Foundation supported this work.

Demand of Cloud Computing More Details about Demand of Cloud Computing here.

Cloud computing is the most demanded field nowadays in the whole world, in February 2011 more than 5,000 cloud computing related jobs were posted online in the United States, according to market and intelligence management professionals its demand increased up to 92 percent as compared to February, and 400 percent increase as compared to February 2010. Demand for IT professionals with cloud computing skills is surging day by day because It's expensive to buy a supercomputer for any organization which costs thousands of dollars as compared to cloud technology which consists of multiple personal computers connected to each other, sharing resources and working on the same task, in the end it provides enough processing power and storage space equivalent to a super computer. Cloud computing technology can transfer anywhere that will benefit IT professionals for setting up a company at different physical locations, IT professionals won't have to worry about updating servers and solving other computer issues which let organization to focus on their main target and it also helps them to increase mobility which let employees free to work anywhere. It will benefit in finance and business too, like setting up a small private cloud of computers in a university can save the cost of buying a supercomputer. It is used in fields which require more processing power and data storage space, like educational institutes, hospitals, national database systems, software production, graphics designing, game developing, and data warehouse companies. The cloud technology provides more resources for the low price but it has some disadvantages too, like the low level of security, Inflexibility, Possible downtime, high power consumption and more complex to implement, because it's implemented over the internet, which is sometimes not reliable. * Security issues: As cloud computing is implemented over the internet, which is less safe as compared to private network makes it less secure and easily hack-able. * Inflexibility: A computer cloud is located at different physical locations, which makes data redundant and results in inflexibility. * High power consumption: It consists of many computers, which requires power for its components in order to work, which results in high power consumption. That's why the demand of software engineers and computer engineers with the skills and expertise of cloud technology increased drastically as compared to other fields. There are different training programs offered by the Cloud Security Alliance an international training institute, where professional get trained and obtain a Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge.

Hoy shines for record Britain, Liu crashes out

Cycling legend Chris Hoy became Britain's greatest Olympian Tuesday when he powered to a sixth career gold, but Chinese athletics icon Liu Xiang crashed to a second successive Olympic heartbreak.

Hoy, 36, won his sixth gold courtesy of victory in the keirin event which allowed him to overtake the five titles garnered by rower Steve Redgrave.

"I'm in shock, you try and compose yourself but it's surreal. I wanted to win gold in front of my home crowd," said Hoy who was in floods of tears at the medal ceremony. "This is the perfect end to my Olympic career."

Hoy's emotional victory helped boost Britain's gold tally to 22, just eight behind the mighty United States, and represented the country's best Olympics performance in more than a century.

Meanwhile, former Olympic 110m hurdles champion and world record holder Liu, who had to withdraw just moments before his opening heat in front of his home fans at Beijing in 2008, saw his 2012 bid crumble in just a split second.

The 29-year-old ploughed into the first hurdle of his opening heat with his left leading leg and crashed heavily to the track.

Liu got up and even hopped down the track to symbolically cross the finish line, also stopping to kiss the 10th and last hurdle, winning warm applause from a stunned 80,000 crowd.

China's athletics team leader in London, Feng Shu Yong, later revealed Liu had possibly snapped his Achilles, a recurrence of a problem which has dogged the 2004 Olympic champion for years.

"The initial diagnosis from the medical staff is that he has a ruptured Achilles tendon... an Achilles injury is almost impossible to recover from fully," said Feng.

Usain Bolt, fresh from running the second-fastest time in history to retain his 100m title on Sunday, began his bid to keep his 200m title by winning his heat in 20.39sec.

"That was an easy run. I am enjoying it," said the Jamaican star. "This is my favourite event so I am looking forward to it."

World 100m champion, and Bolt's compatriot, Yohan Blake also made it through to the next round.

Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi swept to an astonishing victory in the 1500m, just 24 hours after he was controversially disqualified from the Games for not trying in the 800m.

But he was swiftly reinstated after the emergence of medical evidence which allowed him to run in the 1500m, and he took full advantage of his reprieve to produce a decisive kick on the last lap.

"It was the will of God. Yesterday I was out, today I was in," explained Makhloufi.

Australian Sally Pearson held her nerve to win the women's 100m hurdles with a powerful finish and give her country a welcome boost in the medals table.

The reigning world champion clocked an Olympic record of 12.35sec, edging Beijing Olympic gold medallist Dawn Harper of the United States.

Pearson's victory was Australia's first track and field gold of the London Games and helped her country move to 11th in the table with four golds.

Robert Harting won the men's discus to give Germany their first gold in the discipline for 16 years while Ehsan Hadadi's silver was Iran's first ever Olympic medal in athletics.

Alistair Brownlee won the men's triathlon for Britain in Hyde Park and the equestrian squad clinched team dressage gold at Greenwich.

Victoria Pendleton's dream of ending her Olympic career with a cycling sprint gold was shattered by a defeat to long-standing Australian rival Anna Meares.

Laura Trott gave Britain another gold in the gruelling omnium as the hosts won seven of the 10 golds on the track.

China stayed top of the medals table thanks to golds from Feng Zhe in men's gymnastics parallel bars, Deng Linlin on the women's balance beam and their women's table tennis team.

But their hopes of sweeping all eight diving golds were ended by Russia's Ilya Zakharov who won the men's 3m springboard final ahead of Qin Kai and defending champion He Chong.

In men's football, Mexico advanced to the final for the first time after coming from behind to defeat Asian giants Japan 3-1 and will face Brazil who eased past South Korea 3-0 for the gold medal.

Looking for a Bargain Used Car? Try Your Local Dealership ...

used car signEven if you are on budget and looking for a used car, do not pass up what your local dealership has to offer for fear it will be too expensive. If a dealership takes trade-ins, chances are they have a few older, less expensive vehicles that may be bound for the bargain lot or auction, which you may be able to get a great deal on. With more people on a budget these days, many auto dealers feature bargain vehicles on their websites, some under $5,000, most from $5,000 to $10,000. If you find a lot that has some auction bound trade ins, you may be able to buy a vehicle even cheaper. With the new school year starting soon, it is also a good way to buy an inexpensive car for your teenager, or even a more economical vehicle for yourself. The following are some suggestion of how and where to find these vehicles and save yourself money and help the dealership empty out valuable real estate.

If you want to replace the older vehicle you have now with another used car, you may want to used car for sale by ownertry to sell your current vehicle on your own. If you are on a budget and do not have the income to allow for a monthly car payment, buying a used car for cash is probably best. If you sell your vehicle, you will get more cash than you would trading it in, then in turn you can use that cash to start bargain shopping at your local car dealers.? Before you decide to sell the vehicle you are driving now, make sure you do your homework and check vehicle valuation sites such as Kelly Blue Book so you have an idea of what the car is worth, and make sure you are selling it for an appropriate price.

Once you put your car up for sale, start searching online for dealerships in your area that have a bargain or pre-auction section. This will give you an idea of what is advertised online, and give you an idea of which dealers may have older trade-ins that you can buy for cash. Visit these lots and inquire into vehicles they may be sending to the auction because of their age or mileage and inquire if they would sell them for cash. If you find one that is in your budget before you sell your car, ask if you can put a small cash deposit on the vehicle to hold it. If you are asking a reasonable price for the vehicle you have now, you should be able to sell it in no time and go pick up your new used car.

The same procedure applies if you are looking for a second car for yourself or a car for your teenager. Search some local dealerships online and see if they have a bargain or pre-auction section, then inquire into trade-ins that are not featured online. Visit the dealerships and see what they have to offer and see if any of these vehicles fit your budget. Keep in mind, you are not going to find a Corvette or Mustang GT that has been traded in, but you will be able to find a less expensive used car to fit your budget. Remember also that if these vehicles have been recently traded-in and headed for the local used car auction, they will probably need a good wash and interior cleaning, but you can save a lot of money doing it yourself.

buy cheap used carsNo matter what reason you are looking for an inexpensive vehicle, give your local dealership a look and see what they have to offer.? If they have vehicles that are bound for the auction, they can potentially make more money selling it to you than spending the fees associated with selling vehicles at auction. So before you start spending hours looking at Craigslist for a new used car, spend some time online searching dealer websites, you never know what you might find!

Milan, Italy: The Food (2nd in my Italy series) | Dessert Comes First

    My Italy Series:
Milan, Italy, Day 1: Sightseeing, Shopping, & Some Fancy Cars
    Milan, Italy: The Food
Milan, Italy: The Best Things I Eat
    Ravenna
    Bologna & Florence

With the exception of Japan, no other country changes my view of eating as much as Italy does. I think I?m familiar with Italian cuisine because I?ve been eating facsimiles of it my whole life ? pizza, spaghetti, risotto, etc., but really, being in this country makes me realize that Italian cucina (cuisine) does not exist. It?s a striking revelation but it?s true. Italy spans 20 regions and its people are fiercely regional, expressing devotion to their region?s particular cucina. As a waiter who works in Milan but hails from Naples tells me in the characteristic thick Italian accent, ?Signora, the pizza you order here is so-so. As far as I?m concerned, Italy ends in Naples. The pizza in Naples is buonissimo!?

A typical Italian bar where aperitivi and caffes are served.

Before I embark on my Italian escapade, I do my research. I?m aware that each region is renowned for specific specialties and corresponding wines, so I make a list. For a nation ruled by their bellies, I?m aware that there are certain rules that must be followed. I know for instance, that cappuccino and its milky ilk are only for breakfast and are never served after 11am. I do however, see some tourists enjoying a latte in the afternoon at places aimed at travelers, but I decide to adapt the mantra of ?When in Milan?? So for me, only espressos in the afternoon.

When I?m tempted to have a caffeinated pick-me-up in the afternoon to fight the torrid heat, I ask for a caffe shakerato. It?s espresso, ice, and sugar shaken together, and in the version above, laced with amaretto. A similar, non-boozy version is a caffe freddo, cold sweet coffee.

Ah, la lingua Italia! (The Italian language!) I?ll be frank: the language barrier can be challenging at best and sometimes even frightening. The Milanese ? as one guide book succinctly puts it ? ?don?t have time to play nice for visitors?? They remind me of New Yorkers with their impatience and bravado. A local tells me that Italians from the South are warmer ? that may partly explain the surliness of those in Milan, which is situated in the Northwest. As a traveler, I do my best to communicate in my host country?s language, and it?s always greatly rewarding. Servers are surprised at first but then warm up when they hear me ask, ?Signore, che cosa consiglia?? (?Sir, what do you recommend??). On a bus, the driver nods in dawning recognition when I stutter, ?Uno bigletto per andata e ritorno, per favore.? (?One round trip ticket, please.?) In the many shops I enter, I make sure to always greet the storekeeper with ?Buon giorno!? (?Hello!?) and they let me browse at will when I explain, ?Sto solo guardando.? (?I?m just looking.?); and because of these simple efforts of mine, their ?Arrivederci!? (?Goodbye!?) always sounds warmer too. I have to work at committing these phrases to memory in the beginning, but soon saying them starts to feel like second nature.

In restaurants, the menus are listed as l?antipasto (appetizer); il primo piatto (the first course consisting of the foods that Italy is famous for such as soup, pasta, polenta, risotto, etc); il secondo (entr?e or main course centered around protein); il contorno (a side dish eaten to accompany the second); and last, il dolce (dessert). I find that it?s not entirely expected anymore to have all five courses but each diner should have their own dish. Unlike other countries where sharing is the norm, most waiters ask me and my Bin individually as to what we?ll have and sometimes they?ll inquire, ?Divisa en due?? (?Split in two??) The ones more versed in English will ask, ?For sharing?? This is not the country to be mixing and matching an appetizer with the main. And I discover that the succeeding courses really are served only after the previous one has been consumed.

A few more things I?m reminded of since my last trip to Italy:

There is no such thing as tap water here, since bottled water is the norm. Depending on the restaurant, it costs approximately ?3. My Bin likes the ?no gas?/natural water while I prefer the gas, fizzy sparkling water. There?s also something called coperto which is levied as soon as we sit down at a table. This pays for the costs of bread or grissini (bread sticks) and linens. The most expensive coperto we incur is ?4 each, with most starting at ?2.50 per head.

For my first meal in Italy, I treat myself to a Bellini. An Italian cocktail that hails from Venice and named for 15th-century Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini, the drink is an aromatic, lightly fizzy benvenuto! (Welcome!).

In the case of my first meal in Italy, it?s at the Galleria Caf?? Restaurant Pizza (yes, that?s what it says on the receipt), located at the Galleria. My Bin has the Pizza Reale. Its medley of parmesan, mozzarella, and scamorza melt into each other since the latter two are curd cheeses. Pleasantly stringy, they?re rich with cream. It?s only the specks of gorgonzola, sharp and spicy, that introduces some interruption, and lavished over all are strips of speck (smoked ham).

My Cuore Bufala is as simple as can be, wedges of pomodoro (tomato) make a bed on which a ball of mozzarella di bufala lounges. I gasp at the sheer redness of the tomatoes, their blush fiery as their flavor is sweet, so sweet. These tomatoes rival those I eat in Switzerland. The mozzarella, because it?s made from the milk of water buffaloes, is more delicately flavored than that made from cow?s milk. It?s softer too, every bite surrendering moisture from the springy curd. Stark in its simplicity, this is a stunning dish that so takes me that I enjoy it several times more during my stay in Italy.

    Pizze/Pizza
As the waiter in Milan explains to me, pizza is perhaps best in its birthplace of Naples but that doesn?t preclude the pizza elsewhere in Italy. At its simplest, pizza is nothing more than a yeasty flatbread spread with tomato sauce and/or olive oil and an imagination?s worth of toppings. In Italy, it bakes briefly in a wood-fired oven, the extreme heat of which cooks the pizza in under two minutes. As you can see in the marvelous specimen below, the smoke from the oven?s singeing wood flavors the pizza and blesses it with those burnt edges so characteristic of pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven.

The egg?s glowing yolk radiates like the sun, a supernova captured by strips of speck and molten mozzarella.
Italian pizzerie (pizzeria) fall under two types. The first (seen in the first photo) is the fancier type ordered in a restaurant and eaten with a knife and fork. It still amazes me how seemingly svelte people can eat one entire pie each! The second type of pizzerie is that seen directly above, holes-in-the-wall spots selling pizza al taglio (by the slice) or by the meter, snipped with scissors.

An alternative to pizzas and paninis is something called a panzerotti. A specialty of southern Italy, these are semi-circles of dough stuffed with a medley of mixtures, most popularly tomato sauce and mozzarella. Folded then fried, it reminds me of a stromboli but with a more elastic dough. It?s blissful to bite into a panzerotti and be rewarded with a gush of hot cheese and tangy sauce. No one does it better than at Panzerotti Luini, located right behind the Duomo.

    Pasticceria Marchesi

This is where I have my first coffee in Italy. Difficult to find but only because I think we take a wrong turn somewhere, this place is worth the walk for a firsthand ? and old-fashioned ? look at how the Italians have breakfast. Run by senior folk who look rather grumpy on this Sunday morning (hence, the lack of photos on my part), we pay for our cappuccinos at the la cassa (cashier) and then wait behind the bar for them. This wood-panelled pasticceria (pastry shop) has been around since 1824. Cookies and sugar-dipped fruit jellies sit daintily behind the glass displays and my Bin and I sip our hot drinks while standing at the bar Italian-style, sharing a cornetto (breakfast pastry).

The outside of Peck. You can somewhat peer into the windows and get an idea of just how elegant it is.

    Gastronomia Peck
Every food lover who goes to Milan knows about Gastronomia Peck, commonly known as Peck. It?s on Via Spadari, an area considered to be one of Italy?s great food districts. Peck is one of Europe?s most famous food purveyors, a temperature-controlled utopia of refined foods and distinguished looking people serving its customers. I walk around with my mouth half-open trying to take it all in, expressing involuntary gasps of awe alternating with moans of ecstasy. It?s all here, all the food in its finest form that Italy?s famous for ? from the mozzarella to the cured hams to the antipasti plates, oh santo cielo! (Holy heaven!) My Bin protests at my fingernails digging fiercely into his arm in gourmet-induced giddiness. To my chagrin however, photos are forbidden as they often are in places like these. But if you?ve been to Harrod?s in London or Fauchon and the Galleries Lafayette in Paris, then you?re aware of the level of gourmet I?m referring to.

Thankfully, there?s a caf? on the top floor of Peck. It?s as genteel and refined as downstairs, focused on a meticulous selection of fine teas a la Paris?s Mariage Fr?res, and coffee beans, of which I buy a bag of Peck?s Espresso Casa.

My Bin and I stop for a revitalizing drink. He enjoys his il t? la p?sca (peach tea), exclaiming, ?It?s like they steeped an entire peach in there!? I sip and smell and have to agree. As for me, I decide to have a coffee unique to Milan, a marocchino. Oddly translating to ?little Moroccan? ? don?t ask me why ? it?s served in a glass demitasse. This is a mini cappuccino, or rather, a mini mocha complete with a square of dark chocolate. I bite a bit of it, chasing it down with a sip of the coffee. The chocolate sits resilient to the rush of hot liquid then suddenly wastes away, leaving echoes of smoke and cocoa awash in milky foam.

    Gelato
Gelato is gloriously soft and is more than a revelation when eaten in Italy. The best gelati are obviously sold at a gelateria, and those that make their own proudly display signs that read artigianale (artisan/homemade) or produzione propria (production of the proprietor). After countless licks of this eminently soft and frozen sweet, my Bin and I agree that the best gelati are those served from covered stainless steel containers instead of plastic. ?They?re more concerned with quality instead of showmanship,? my Bin elucidates between licks of his nth gelato in a coppa (cup).

The cono (cone) displays at gelaterias are often astounding and seem to defy architectural height and balance.
Most gelato cones are longer than the regular joe, about 6 inches at least.

There are two gelateria in Milan that I think are outstanding and judging from the ever-present lines snaking out the door, many others share the same sentiment. The first is Grom, which hails from Turin, Italy but also has branches in the US. They take pride in sourcing the finest ingredients to mix into their gelato, thus the darkest cacao from Venezuela, hazelnuts from Piedmont, and coffee that tastes like it was just brewed. Thanks to DCF reader jayp for giving me the heads up on this before my trip.

It?s only on my third visit to cioccolat italiani that I?m able to fit through the door;? Rain or shine, weekend or weekday, it overflows with people who can?t get enough of whatever ?it? is.

The riveting exterior of cioccolat italiani. I love that display of flowing chocolate on the right. Photos aren?t allowed inside so I?m lucky to have gotten a few in ?ninja-style? before being told off.

?It? is cioccolat italiani that happens to serve a gelato that is perhaps unparalleled in Milan, maybe in all of Italy. The gelato lab is within the premises (see photo above) and after paying at the la cassa (cashier), we?re given a number. Only when that number appears on the electronic screen do we get served. I gaze at the flavors on the backboard and stare, stupefied at the block and bars of chocolate that line the room.

cioccolat italiani is the only gelateria where one is asked if he/she prefers a white or dark chocolate bottom filler (see those spouts in the photo above?), and then the server fills the base of the cone with the liquid cacao of choice. The sight of that flowing chocolate and the resultant flavor sensation that awaits me after the gelato is all gone, is one of those food moments that embeds itself in my food memory. No wonder the lines are out the door.

Above, my nutty gelato cone with black cherry and pistachio. Below, my Bin chooses fragola (strawberry) sorbet and crema with lashings of Nutella.

Best for last: liquid white chocolate at the very bottom; to plug any leaks, but really, to imprint the gloriousness of this gelato in my mind.

Oklahoma wildfire crews helped by cooler temperatures

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Cooler temperatures gave a slight boost on Sunday to crews battling 18 wildfires across Oklahoma that have torched at least 121 structures and charred thousands of acres amid a drought.

The blazes, which have charred more than 68,000 acres across the state, burned throughout the night, forcing more evacuations in small towns and rural areas in central Oklahoma, although it will be days before the full damage is tallied, officials said.

One of the most devastating fires tore through the town of Luther, about 25 miles from Oklahoma City, on Saturday, razing 56 structures, although it is now under control. Authorities are investigating whether that blaze was deliberately set.

A cool front that passed across the state overnight lowered temperatures by up to 25 degrees Fahrenheit and may keep the mercury from topping the 100-degree F (38 degrees Celsius) mark in areas where fire crews are working on Sunday, the National Weather Service said, although underlying drought conditions remain unchanged.

"This year is a bad year, but it's not as bad as last year -- only because we got a late start," said Michelle Finch Walker, a spokeswoman for Oklahoma Forestry Services. "This year is going to be remembered for the number of structures lost," she added.

The largest of the state's fires has blackened a 58,000-acre (23,490 hectare) stretch between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, the state's two largest cities, Finch said, noting that it was one of the largest blazes in the state's history.

No deaths have been reported. Oklahoma remains under a state of emergency, with a ban on outdoor burning by order of Governor Mary Fallin.

Oklahoma has joined several other states including Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Arkansas and Nebraska in being struck by wildfires during the widespread drought.

Nearly two-thirds of the contiguous United States was experiencing some level of drought as of July 31, according to the Drought Monitor, a weekly report compiled by U.S. climate experts. Nearly all of Oklahoma was under severe drought or worse.

Below-normal rainfall, temperatures up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 Celsius) and wilted vegetation have made the potential for wildfires extremely high throughout Oklahoma.

Mars tugging on approaching NASA rover Curiosity

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2012) ? The gravitational tug of Mars is now pulling NASA's car-size geochemistry laboratory, Curiosity, in for a suspenseful landing in less than 40 hours.

"After flying more than eight months and 350 million miles since launch, the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft is now right on target to fly through the eye of the needle that is our target at the top of the Mars atmosphere," said Mission Manager Arthur Amador of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

The spacecraft is healthy and on course for delivering the mission's Curiosity rover close to a Martian mountain at 10:31 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5 PDT (1:31 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6 EDT). That's the time a signal confirming safe landing could reach Earth, give or take about a minute for the spacecraft's adjustments to sense changeable atmospheric conditions.

The only way a safe-landing confirmation can arrive during that first opportunity is via a relay by NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter. Curiosity will not be communicating directly with Earth as it lands, because Earth will set beneath the Martian horizon from Curiosity's perspective about two minutes before the landing.

"We are expecting Odyssey to relay good news," said Steve Sell of the JPL engineering team that developed and tested the mission's complicated "sky crane" landing system. "That moment has been more than eight years in the making."

A dust storm in southern Mars being monitored by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter appears to be dissipating. "Mars is cooperating by providing good weather for landing," said JPL's Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist for Curiosity.

Curiosity was approaching Mars at about 8,000 mph (about 3,600 meters per second) Saturday morning. By the time the spacecraft hits the top of Mars' atmosphere, about seven minutes before touchdown, gravity will accelerate it to about 13,200 mph (5,900 meters per second).

NASA plans to use Curiosity to investigate whether the study area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life, including chemical ingredients for life.

"In the first few weeks after landing, we will be ramping up science activities gradually as we complete a series of checkouts and we gain practice at operating this complex robot in Martian conditions," said JPL's Richard Cook, deputy project manager for Curiosity.

The first Mars pictures expected from Curiosity are reduced-resolution fisheye black-and-white images received either in the first few minutes after touchdown or more than two hours later. Higher resolution and color images from other cameras could come later in the first week. Plans call for Curiosity to deploy a directional antenna on the first day after landing and raise the camera mast on the second day.

The big hurdle is landing. Under some possible scenarios, Curiosity could land safely, but temporary communication difficulties could delay for hours or even days any confirmation that the rover has survived landing.

The prime mission lasts a full Martian year, which is nearly two Earth years. During that period, researchers plan to drive Curiosity partway up a mountain informally called Mount Sharp. Observations from orbit have identified exposures there of clay and sulfate minerals that formed in wet environments.

The Mars Science Laboratory is a project of NASA's Science Mission Directorate. The mission is managed by JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Its rover, Curiosity, was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. Information about the mission and about ways to participate in challenges of the landing, including a new video game, is available at: http://www.nasa.gov/mars and http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/ .
