Fish sold in New York is routinely mislabeled: study

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nearly three in five New York City grocery stores and restaurants that sell seafood have mislabeled part of their stock, substituting varieties that could cause health problems, according to a new study.

Some 39 percent of the fish obtained for the study by the ocean conservation group Oceana was inaccurately identified, Oceana said. Sometimes cheap fish is substituted for more expensive varieties or plentiful species for scarce ones.

Forensic DNA analysis revealed 58 percent of 81 New York retailers and eateries sampled incorrectly labeled the seafood they sold, according to the study released Tuesday.

"It's unacceptable that New York seafood lovers are being duped more than one-third of the time when purchasing certain types of fish," Kimberly Warner, a senior scientist at Oceana and an author of the study, said in a news release.

In some instances, consumers unknowingly purchased fish that could pose health risks.

Blueline tilefish masqueraded as halibut and red snapper. The FDA urges pregnant women, nursing mothers and small children to avoid tilefish given its high mercury content.

All but one of the 17 white tuna samples obtained from sushi restaurants turned out to be escolar, a fish whose diarrhea-inducing properties earned it the nickname the "ex-lax fish."

Mislabeled seafood can present a public health concern because many hazards are species specific, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) spokeswoman said in an email. Allergic reactions and food-borne illnesses are some of the possible health hazards, the spokeswoman said.

New York's rate of seafood mislabeling was higher than Miami's (31 percent) but lower than that of Boston (48 percent) and Los Angeles (55 percent), according to recent Oceana investigations.

What distinguishes New York's seafood marketplace from those of the other American cities Oceana tested is the presence of smaller, independent food stores, 40 percent of which sold mislabeled fish, Warner said in an interview. In contrast, only 12 percent of seafood bought at national chain grocery stores in New York were labeled incorrectly.

The problem is not new. A study appearing in a 1992 issue of Consumer Reports found about a third of the seafood sampled in New York, Chicago, and San Jose was incorrectly labeled.

Nor is seafood mislabeling an issue that has gone unreported. The discovery in August 2011 that Zabar's, a gourmet food store on Manhattan, had been passing off crawfish as lobster in its lobster salad for at least 15 years was the subject of multiple, high-profile media stories.

eCommerce Trends 2012 Review ? Inventory & Accounting ERP ...

Back in January 2012 we posted an article discussing upcoming eCommerce trends for the year. With the end of 2012 just around the corner, let?s go back and revisit those predictions to see how many came to pass. ?eCommerce sites are a growing asset for both business to consumer (B2C) and business to business (B2B) companies, and in 2010 51% of internet users ordered goods and services online ? an amount valued at $15.3 billion. ?By 2015 this number is expected to increase to $31 billion. ?On the B2B side of eCommerce, a US survey showed that over the last year approximately 80% of B2B companies have invested in an eCommerce platform, and the importance of eCommerce software for wholesalers and distributors will continue to increase in the future.

The first prediction from the article was the rise of engagement through social media with eCommerce.? This prediction partially came true. ?This past year, 77% of small and medium-sized businesses have used social media for 25% or more of their total marketing efforts (which is an increase from the 50% who were using social media the previous year), yet less than 1% of online purchases are a result of something that the consumer saw posted on a social media site.? That being said, 48% of consumers have connected in some way with at least one brand or company on social media, and believe that it is still a great channel for showcasing new products, brands, retailers and trends.?? Because of this, companies are continuously coming up with creative ways to interact with consumers through social media. For example, a few companies have posted images of prototype products on their Facebook pages and then invited consumers to provide feedback on the products.

The next prediction that was made was an increase in tablet and mobile shopping.? With the holiday season approaching and the release of Apple?s iPhone 5 and iPad mini this year, among other factors, experts predict that the number of people who own a tablet will double within the next 3 years.? So far in 2012 consumers have spent more than $20.7 billion shopping on their mobile devices ? especially tablets, and 65% of B2B executives make business purchases from their mobile devices. ??Given these numbers and the expected increase in tablet sales, I think it?s safe to predict that the rise of mobile and tablet shopping will continue in the future.

The third prediction was that customer support channels would be changing.? Although eCommerce sites have provided consumers with more channels for accessing support such as online chat, text messaging and social networking sites, 90% of consumers prefer to speak with a support representative on the phone. ?So although eCommerce sites are providing consumers with more channels for accessing support, it is the traditional methods of support communication that most consumers prefer.

The next eCommerce prediction was improvement in the consumer?s website experiences.? In 2012 and beyond it will be unacceptable for businesses to have slow, out-dated websites and many companies have already begun to realize this.? It is rare that you come across a website that loads slowly, has out-dated images, and uses flash, and those websites that still include these imperfections will become overshadowed by their up-to-date counterparts. ??In addition many websites are taking a page from Apple?s book with simple design structure and more and more websites are becoming mobile friendly to keep up with tablet and mobile device users.

The last eCommerce predication was that recruiting candidates to help your business evolve with the trends mentioned above would be difficult, and using resources from an outside organization might be necessary. ?Although there hasn?t seemed to be a lack of skilled talent available this year, new technology creates new job titles and positions.? Keeping up-to-date with these changing trends will be imperative for businesses looking to grow in the future.

Overall most of the eCommerce predictions came true, and it is obvious that eCommerce has huge implications for businesses in the US and Canada.? Keeping up with these trends by investing in technology and software that caters to each type of consumer and channel of communication will help businesses continue to grow their eCommerce offerings.

Mega-supplier Johnson Controls has withdrawn its bid for the bankrupt battery maker A123 Systems after declining to match a higher, $256.6 million bid submitted by the Chinese company Wanxiang Group Corp.

JCI originally appeared to have landed a deal to take control of the automotive portion of A123 ? but the deal was scuttled in bankruptcy proceedings ? though it leaves open some national security concerns. Meanwhile, Illinois-based Navitas Systems will buy A123?s government business, including all outstanding military contracts, for $2.25 million.??

A123 currently is the principal supplier of batteries for Fisker, which has seen its deliveries interrupted since the company filed for bankruptcy in October. The battery maker?s other clients include General Motors which will use an A123 pack in its new Chevrolet Spark EV electric vehicle.

The final sale to Wanxiang, which has been something of an uncertain suitor until now, is subject to approval by the bankruptcy court. A hearing is currently scheduled for Dec. 11, 2012. Sale to Wanxiang is also subject to review by the Committee for Foreign Investment in the United States and requires approval by the U.S. government. Timing for such review and approvals is unknown at this time.?

But there are some concerns being raised about the deal, U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga, a Michigan Republican, cautioning there is a ?thin line between Wanxiang and the Chinese government.? As a result, he said in a statement, ?I am concerned about the government of China having access to sensitive technologies being used by our military forces.?

By splitting the sale, with military and government operations going to Navitas, however, A123 officials say they hope to assuage such concerns.?

?Reports by other parties that our proposal involved an elimination of jobs in Michigan are inaccurate,? Molinaroli added.?While A123?s automotive and government assets?were complementary to Johnson Controls? portfolio and aligned with our long-term goals, Wanxiang?s offer was beyond the value of those assets to Johnson Controls,? said Alex Molinaroli, president, Johnson Controls Power Solutions.

Johnson Controls was the first in the world to produce lithium-ion batteries for mass-production vehicles, and also launched the first U.S. facility to produce complete LIon battery cells and packs for hybrid and electric vehicles, in Holland, Mich. The company was recently named as one of the industry leaders in the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research?s $120 million energy research hub led by Argonne National Lab and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

In 2009, Johnson Controls was awarded a $299 million matching grant by the DOE under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to build domestic manufacturing capacity for advanced batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles.?

Last month, A123 got approval to use $50 million of Debtor-in-Possession financing from Wanxiang. The financing supplements the pre-petition $22.5 million of liquidity and letter of credit support that Wanxiang provided to A123.

Conservatives can be persuaded to care more about environmental issues when couched in terms of fending off threats to 'purity'

Dec. 10, 2012 ? When it comes to climate change, deforestation and toxic waste, the assumption has been that conservative views on these topics are intractable. But new research from the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that such viewpoints can be changed after all, when the messages about the need to be better stewards of the land are couched in terms of fending off threats to the "purity" and "sanctity" of Earth and our bodies.

A UC Berkeley study has found that while people who identified themselves as conservatives tend to be less concerned about the environment than their liberal counterparts, their motivation increased significantly when they read articles that stressed the need to "protect the purity of the environment" and were shown such repellant images as a person drinking dirty water, a forest filled with garbage, and a city under a cloud of smog.

Published Dec. 10 in the online issue of the journal Psychological Science, the findings indicate that reframing pro-environmental rhetoric according to values that resonate strongly with conservatives can reduce partisan polarization on ecological matters.

"These findings offer the prospect of pro-environmental persuasion across party lines," said Robb Willer, a UC Berkeley social psychologist and coauthor of the study. "Reaching out to conservatives in a respectful and persuasive way is critical, because large numbers of Americans will need to support significant environment reforms if we are going to deal effectively with climate change, in particular."

Researchers conducted a content analysis of more than 200 op-eds published in such newspapers as The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, and found the pro-environmental arguments were most often pitched in terms of moral obligations to care about the natural environment and protect it from harm, a theme that resonates more powerfully with liberals, they added, than with conservatives.

They hypothesized that conservatives would be more responsive to environmental arguments focused on such principles as purity, patriotism and reverence for a higher authority. In their study, the authors specifically tested the effectiveness of arguments for protecting the purity of the environment. They said the results suggest they were on the right track:

"When individuals view protecting the environment as a moral issue, they are more likely to recycle and support government legislation to curb carbon emissions," said Matthew Feinberg, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at Stanford University and lead author of the study which he conducted while at UC Berkeley.

Scientific consensus on the existence of warming global land and ocean temperatures -- attributed in large part to human activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions -- continues to grow and influence public opinion, especially with such extreme weather events as Hurricane Sandy. A recent Rasmussen poll reported that 68 percent of Americans view climate change as a "serious problem," compared to a 2010 Gallup poll in which 48 percent of Americans said they thought global warming was exaggerated.

In the first experiment, 187 men and women recruited via several U.S. Craigslist websites rated their political ideology on a scale of "extremely liberal" to "extremely conservative." They then rated the morality of such activities as recycling a water bottle versus throwing it in the garbage. The results of that experiment, and a similar one conducted on 476 college undergraduates, showed that liberals are more prone to viewing sustainability as a moral issue than are conservatives.

Next, researchers conducted a content analysis of pro-environmental videos on YouTube and more than 200 op-eds in national newspapers, sorting them under the themes of "harm/care," which they expected to resonate more with liberals, and "purity/sanctity," which they predicted would appeal more to conservatives. They found that most pro-environmental messages leaned strongly toward liberal moral concerns.

In the last experiment, 308 men and women, again recruited via Craigslist, were randomly assigned to read one of three articles. The harm/care-themed article described the destruction wreaked on the environment by humans and pitched protection of the environment as a moral obligation. Images accompanying the text were of a forest with tree stumps, a barren coral reef and drought-cracked land, which are more typical of the visuals promoted by pro-environmental groups.

The purity/sanctity-themed article stressed how pollution has contaminated Earth and people's bodies, and argued for cleaning up and purifying the environment. To enhance those themes and elicit disgust, the accompanying images showed a person drinking filthy water, a city under a cloud of pollution and a forest full of garbage. The neutral article talked about the history of neckties.

Participants were then asked to rate how strongly they felt certain emotions, including disgust, in response to what they'd read. Next, they reported how strongly they agreed or disagreed with such statements as "It is important to protect the environment," "I would support government legislation aimed at protecting the environment" and 'I believe humans are causing global warming."

Overall, the study found that the purity-themed message inspired conservatives to feel higher levels of disgust, which in turn increased their support for protecting the environment.
