NASA forms $1.1B partnership with private space companies

The U.S. space agency wants to help private companies reach the stars without outsourcing to other countries

Though many of us dream of exploring the stars or starting a human colony on Mars, that dream is not shared by the government. If the United States is going to return to the stars, it's going to need the help of private companies ? a fact NASA seems to acknowledge via its new $1.1 billion agreement to support private space craft development.

Specifically, the space agency has made funding agreements with three private companies that seek to send man into space. The Sierra Nevada corporation will receive $212.5 million, SpaceX will get $440 million, and Boeing will get $460 million. The goal, aside from going where no man has ever gone before, is to keep space-related jobs in American hands. Says NASA administrator Charles Bolden, "We have selected three companies that will help keep us on track to end the outsourcing of human spaceflight and create high-paying jobs in Florida and elsewhere across the country."

Sierra Nevada, SpaceX, and Boeing will be using the money to perform tests over the next two years in an effort to "launch crewed orbital demonstration missions to low Earth orbit" by 2015. From there, it's hoped that the companies will help provide a means to explore the solar system.

Authentic Parenting: Transitioning from Daughter to Mother

written by Liza

When you become a mother you stop being a child.?Paradoxically?you will always be your parents baby. So in the transition from a child to an adult that is responsible for their own children, where do your parents fit in? In some cultures the minute a woman's grandchild is born, they become grandmother and will be referred to as "grandmother" by everyone including their own children from that moment forward. I imagine this would help ease the transition, and that by accepting the title the new grandparent is accepting the roles and responsibilities befitting the name. Thus, the new mother is free to take on her role as "mother" in establishing her own home and family life (possibly in a distinctly different way to the household she grew up in).

However, in Western culture the fear of death, old age and being sent to a nursing home, makes the title of "grandmother" (or "grandfather") a somewhat less appealing role to take on. Children grow up so fast and for new grandparents the realization that their baby is in fact an adult can be a particularly shocking and abrupt reminder of how quickly the time has passed. In an attempt to hold onto the past and perhaps make right some of their?perceived?wrong doings, a new grandparent may cling to the hope of a second chance like a life raft. This may result in one of two situations or a mixture of both. Firstly, they may want to control the parenting decisions for their grandchild in an attempt to use the new baby as an avenue for their own mothering. Or secondly, they deny the fact that their child has grown up and focus their attention on mothering the new mother as if she were still a child.

As a new mother I have found it very challenging to navigate my way from "daughter" to "mother". As a child I learnt that if I was going to accept my parent's help, I would need to accept it on their terms. As an adult I have found it hard to stick to my decisions when the people I am used to?acquiescing?to (my own parents) don't agree with them. It is this hesitation and indecision that has been toxic for me. However, as hard it has been (and yes their have been many tears at the dinner table in the process) the realization that my decisions are the right decisions for my family have been uplifting. I have had to accept that I will never be the "perfect mother" and that some of the decisions I make will have negative consequences (and may even illicit a few "I told you so's" from lookers on) but this is ok, in fact it is more than ok. All I want is to be a good role model for my beautiful boy and I look forward to teaching him by example that making mistakes is part of the learning process and when we make one we bravely admit it, make it better to the best of our ability,?apologise (without beating ourselves up)?and move on.

What challenges have you faced in becoming a new mother, father, grandmother or grandfather? What has helped you navigate your way through the transition?

House approves new sanctions on Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to slap sanctions on Iran's energy, shipping and financial industries, convinced that increasing the economic pressure on Tehran will force it to abandon its suspected nuclear weapons program.

By a vote of 421-6, the House backed the legislation that builds on the current penalties directed at financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank. The Senate is expected to easily pass the measure and send it to President Barack Obama for his signature.

"Ultimately, we will all be judged by a simple question: Did we stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapons capability?" said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., during the House debate. "If the answer is no ? if we fail ? then nothing else matters. If we fail, it would be of no comfort to the American people, whose security and future would be put in danger. If we fail, it would be of no comfort to our ally Israel, whose very existence would be put in danger."

Ros-Lehtinen, the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, negotiated the compromise bill.

The legislation would impose sanctions on anyone who mines uranium with Iran; sells, leases or provides oil tankers to Tehran; or provides insurance to the National Iranian Tanker Co., the state-run shipping line. The bill seeks to undermine Iran's ability to repatriate revenue from the sale of crude oil.

The bill would penalize anyone who works in Iran's petroleum, petrochemical or natural gas sector, or helps Tehran's oil and gas industry by providing goods, services, technology or infrastructure.

Separately this week, President Barack Obama announced new penalties on Tehran's energy sector and on foreign banks in China and Iraq that the U.S. says help the Islamic republic evade international penalties.

The United States and Europe insist that the penalties are working. Iran has exported 2.5 million barrels of oil a day to Europe, China, India, Japan and South Korea. U.S. officials say the penalties have reduced Iran oil exports to less than 1.8 million barrels a day, costing Tehran about $63 million daily.

But in Jerusalem on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu challenged the effectiveness of sanctions.

"Neither sanctions nor diplomacy has yet had any impact on Iran's nuclear weapons program," the Israeli leader said, with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta standing by his side.

The compromise bill would target the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and anyone who assists the paramilitary group, including foreign government agencies.

The bill also would deny visas and freeze assets on individuals and companies that supply Iran with technology that could be used against its citizens, such as tear gas, rubber bullets and surveillance equipment. The bill extends those sanctions on human rights violators to Syria, where President Bashar Assad's regime is accused of a bloody crackdown against protesters.

The bill requires companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Late last year, Congress overwhelmingly approved sanctions targeting foreign financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank by barring them from opening or maintaining correspondent operations in the United States. Those sanctions applied to foreign central banks only for transactions that involve the sale or purchase of petroleum or petroleum products.

The new bill expands on those penalties.

"These provisions are very important, but the Iranians should not be fooled into thinking that this is the last word on sanctions. Far from it," said Rep. Howard Berman of California, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

A handful of lawmakers objected to the legislation, casting it as a step toward war.

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, said the legislation should be called the "Obsession With Iran Act" and warned against "beating the war drums once again."

"We need to stop the wars. We don't have the money to fight these wars any longer," Paul said.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, said the bill sets the stage for another conflict

Berman dismissed that idea.

"This is not the next step to war. This is the alternative to war," he said.

Fish and shellfish are an important part of a healthy diet, and nowhere is fresh fish easier to find than the coast. ??Increase your odds for a long and healthy life with a simple, tasty change: ?add fish to your weekly menus.

Here are some nutrition facts to motivate you. ??Fish is a lean, low-calorie source of protein and a great source of critical omega-3 fatty acids. ??These play a crucial role in brain function, as well as growth and development, and may even reduce the risk of heart disease. ???But here?s the catch: ?the body can?t make them. ???We must go to the source for omega-3s, and in a seafood-centric environment, that?s easy. ??They come from fish ? such as salmon, tuna, and halibut; other seafood, including algae and krill; some plants; and nut oils.

A well-balanced diet that includes a variety of fish and shellfish can contribute to the whole family?s well-being. ? ? Just remember, you don?t have to go overboard to reap the benefits. ??A little bit of ?daily catch? goes a long way. ??The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice a week (especially fatty fish like trout, herring, sardines, tuna and salmon) at least twice a week. ???I personally recommend consuming no more than one fish meal per week from predatory fish (shark, tuna, swordfish, etc.) and no more than two per week from non-predatory fish (sardines, salmon, shrimp, etc.). ??Very few palate-challenged people will be overwhelmed by this schedule.

Some of you are thinking ?I know fish is good for you, but my family?doesn?t?really like it.? ?There are many recipes that you can use which will increase the appeal. ???Look for salmon stuffed with crab and breadcrumbs, or use a tasty pesto to enhance the flavor (Costco offers one of the best I?ve found, in its refrigerated section) . ??Add grilled fish to a salad loaded with other items. ???Throw some shellfish into your marinara. ???Be creative and research ways that might make your family happy when consuming fish or shellfish.
